Officially selected as an exhibiting artist for Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2026, Paul will present Both Sides Now, a major new site-specific sculpture created for the Bondi coastline.
Widely regarded as the world’s largest free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibitions, Sculpture by the Sea transforms the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk for three weeks each year and attracts more than half a million visitors. Paul’s selection marks a significant milestone in his expanding visual-art practice and places the work within one of Australia’s most prominent public-art events.
Drawing on the ancient Roman deity Janus, Both Sides Now presents two opposing faces sharing a single head — a monumental exploration of ideological division, fractured perspective and the erosion of common ground in contemporary life.
Standing approximately three metres high, the sculpture is constructed in steel and clad in precision-cut mirrored stainless-steel facets. These reflective planes act as a metaphorical prism, fragmenting and refracting the surrounding coastline, sky and viewer so that the work changes continually according to where it is encountered.
The two faces occupy the same body yet remain permanently unable to meet one another’s gaze: a physical metaphor for opposing realities existing side by side while increasingly losing the ability to recognise a shared truth.
The installation represents a major evolution in Paul’s practice, translating themes previously explored through intimate ceramic sculpture, painting and photography into an ambitious work of architectural scale and public presence.
