JANUS SERIES
Using the ancient Roman deity Janus as a totem, this body of work explores duality, division and the erosion of middle ground in an increasingly polarised world. Across sculpture and painting, opposing faces occupy a single form, reflecting the tension between conflicting truths and perspectives. Faceted and reflective surfaces act as shifting prisms, changing with the viewer’s position and implicating them in the work itself. The series considers how identity, belief and perception are shaped by where we stand.
MYTHS AND MONSTERS
Drawing on Greco-classical mythology, this body of work recasts familiar archetypes through a contemporary lens, exploring masculinity, queerness, vulnerability and the theatricality of gender.
Classical torsos, sirens and hybrid figures are reimagined as unstable symbols rather than fixed ideals. Works such as the removable wolf-head torso examine the alpha male as a constructed myth, while other figures disrupt traditional ideas of strength and beauty.
Across the series, ancient forms become vehicles for questioning the identities and behaviours we inherit, perform and project.
FORM & FISSURE
Inspired by the relationship between the human body and the natural world, Form & Fissure is an ongoing photographic series rooted in Paul’s long connection to the Bondi coastline and a 17-year yoga practice.
The works align the contours of the human form with ancient sandstone fissures, rock strata and tidal landscapes, allowing body and environment to visually converge.
Drawing on yoga’s literal meaning of “union”, the series explores belonging, impermanence and the idea that the body is not separate from the landscape, but a continuation of it.
